How to add or subtract days from a date
| Start | Action | Result (tool) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-02-10 | Add 90 calendar days | 2026-05-11 |
| 2026-12-31 | Subtract 45 calendar days | 2026-11-16 |
To move a deadline, notice period, or due date by a whole number of days, use Add days or Subtract days on the date difference calculator. The rows above are locked to that tool. This article is about shifting a date. If you need how many days lie between two dates, use the difference tab and the days between two dates guide instead.
Calendar shift method
result_date = start_date + N calendar days (Add days)
result_date = start_date − N calendar days (Subtract days)
N must be an integer. The tool does not apply “skip weekend” logic inside add or subtract. Every day on the calendar counts, including Saturdays and Sundays.
Worked deadlines and notice periods
Net-90 style due date
Invoice date 2026-02-10, due in 90 calendar days → 2026-05-11.
Count backward 45 days
Event on 2026-12-31, need a date 45 calendar days earlier → 2026-11-16.
Thirty-day notice from mid-month
Notice given 2026-01-15, plus 30 calendar days → 2026-02-14.
Thirty days before a mid-month due date
Due 2026-04-15, minus 30 calendar days → 2026-03-16.
Write the rule next to the result: “30 calendar days after notice,” not only the ISO date. Contracts that say “business days” need a different count.
Month-end edge cases
Adding days is not the same as “add one month.” The calculator uses day arithmetic.
| Start | Offset | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-01-31 | +1 | 2026-02-01 |
| 2026-01-31 | +30 | 2026-03-02 |
| 2026-03-31 | +1 | 2026-04-01 |
| 2026-03-01 | −1 | 2026-02-28 |
January 31 plus 30 days lands on March 2 in 2026 because February has 28 days that year. People who expect “February 31 clamped to February 28, then plus a remainder” are using a month-based rule the add-days tab does not implement. If a form says “one month later,” ask whether it means calendar months or a fixed day count.
Leap-year note: subtracting one day from 2024-03-01 yields 2024-02-29 in the same library. The 2026 example above correctly hits February 28 because 2026 is not a leap year.
Calendar days vs business days
Add / Subtract: calendar only.
Difference + exclude weekends: counts Monday through Friday between two dates (both ends when they are weekdays). It still ignores public holidays.
Example: from 2026-06-01 add 14 calendar days → 2026-06-15. The calendar span is 14 days. With weekends excluded on the difference tab between those same dates, weekdays total 11. If a notice said “14 business days,” neither 14 calendar nor this 11-weekday figure is automatically correct for a holiday-aware legal calendar. Confirm the authority’s rule.
Practical pattern:
- If the text says calendar days, use Add or Subtract.
- If it says business days or working days, ask for the exact definition.
- Use Difference with exclude weekends only as a weekday estimate, then subtract holidays yourself from an official list when required.
Another worked pair: weekend-aware check
You schedule a task for 14 calendar days after 2026-06-01. Add days returns 2026-06-15. Before you call that “two weeks of office time,” run Difference from 2026-06-01 to 2026-06-15 with weekends excluded: 11 weekdays and 14 calendar days. If your team only works weekdays, the calendar shift overstates working time. If the contract literally says fourteen calendar days, 2026-06-15 is still the right date.
Shipping and payment rails sometimes quote “T+2” style rules that are neither pure calendar nor “exclude Saturday Sunday only.” When the product sheet defines its own calendar, follow that sheet after you use this tool for a first pass.
Common mistakes
- Treating add-days as “same day next month.”
- Forgetting weekends still count in add/subtract.
- Mixing a result date from add-days with an inclusive day count from a form.
- Using a DD/MM written date that another person reads as MM/DD. Prefer
YYYY-MM-DDin notes. - Assuming the tool knows court or bank holidays.
Run the shifts yourself
Open Add days with start 2026-02-10 and offset 90. Switch to Subtract days with 2026-12-31 and 45. Compare month-end trials like 2026-01-31 + 30. Nothing is sent to a server.
When planning travel or rentals, “number of nights” can disagree with a pure day offset. Align the product’s rule with the tab you use before you book.
Share results as ISO dates (YYYY-MM-DD) in email so day and month do not swap by locale habit. A note that says only “the 3rd” without a month is how teams miss a deadline by thirty days. If two people must agree on a notice end date, paste both the start ISO date and the offset (“2026-01-15 plus 30 calendar days equals 2026-02-14”) so the arithmetic can be rechecked in the tool in under a minute.
Frequently asked questions
Which tool tab adds or subtracts days?
On the date difference calculator, use Add days or Subtract days. Enter a start date and an integer offset to get a result date.
Are these calendar days or business days?
Add and subtract shift calendar days only. They do not skip weekends. To count weekdays between two dates, use Difference with exclude weekends.
What happens at month end?
The tool adds whole days on the calendar. Example: 2026-01-31 plus 30 days is 2026-03-02, not a forced “same day next month.”
Does it know public holidays?
No. Weekend exclusion in difference mode drops Saturday and Sunday only. Official holiday calendars are separate.
Can I use this for legal notice periods?
Use it for planning, then confirm whether the contract counts calendar days, business days, or another rule.
Where do I find the number of days between two dates?
Use the days-between guide and the Difference tab when you need a span, not a shifted result date.
